A delightful dessert made with layers of buttery phyllo dough and a sweet, nutty filling, soaked in syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 2 1/2 cups chopped nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon in a bowl.
  3. Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth.
  4. Layer the phyllo in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  5. After 8 layers, sprinkle some of the nut mixture over the phyllo and continue layering until all ingredients are used.
  6. Cut the baklava into diamond shapes.
  7. Bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Meanwhile, combine water, sugar, honey, and vanilla in a saucepan, bring to a boil, then let simmer for about 10 minutes.
  9. Once baked, immediately pour the syrup over the baklava.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

Serve with coffee or mint tea, and it pairs nicely with fresh fruits.
